From Rescue to Royal Regalia – The Tale of a Drum Horse

Digger’s saga began in the compassionate hands of World Horse Welfare. Rescued in 2008, he was a homeless, motherless, and lame foal suffering from hind-limb issues. Under their care, he underwent extensive veterinary treatments, including surgery at the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) Veterinary School. Despite his challenges, Digger’s spirit remained unbroken, and his towering frame soon measured up to 19 hands.
In an extraordinary turn of fate, Digger found his path transformed when he was adopted by the Household Cavalry as a trainee drum horse in 2010. Leaving his Scottish home, he embarked on a journey to Knightsbridge (London), marking the beginning of his training to become a member of the esteemed Household Cavalry band.
Eileen Gillen, Manager at World Horse Welfare’s Belwade Farm, had cared for Digger during his rehabilitation. Reflecting on his transformation, she expressed her astonishment, “I always had high hopes for him but never in my wildest dreams did I think he’d have a Royal calling!” Digger’s enormous size, now measuring an impressive 20 hands, didn’t deter him; instead, it became a symbol of his resilience and determination.
Digger’s role as a drum horse is not merely ceremonial; it represents a beacon of hope and inspiration. His story epitomizes the remarkable potential of horses given the right care and opportunities. With an official military inventory number, Army horse number 8463, Digger stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of rescue animals, proving that with love and dedication, they can find their place even in the grandeur of royal service.
